Pitt defensive coordinator Randy Bates was named yesterday the American Football Coaches Association FBS Assistant Coach of the Year.
Bates led a defense that was first in the nation in total sacks and tackles for loss, and was third in rushing defense and ninth in interceptions. The Panthers were 20th in the nation in total defense and had two consensus All-Americans in defensive ends Rashad Weaver and Patrick Jones III.
The award also recognizes a coach’s community service. Bates is a retired Navy lieutenant who works with, visits, and gives Pitt football tickets to hospitalized veterans.
