The Steelers had the day off yesterday and return to the practice field at St. Vincent today. It will be the first day in pads and the first full-contact practice of camp.
Yesterday the Steelers signed former Baylor and Penn State running back John Lovett, according to a release by the XFL, where Lovett played this spring for the Vegas Vipers. He will take one of two roster spots that have opened up in the backfield, with the retirement of Monte Pottebaum and the season-ending shoulder injury suffered by Alfonzo Graham. The rookie Graham posted that he has a torn labrum and will miss the season. He was signed after a rookie minicamp tryout.
The Steelers secondary has undergone another big change in the offseason, with the signings of veterans Patrick Peterson, Chandon Sullivan and Keanu Neal and the drafting of rookie corners Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr.
One of last year’s newcomers, Damontae Kazee, says it’s important to know every secondary position, especially with new guys entering the mix.
Cornerback Levi Wallace says working with a potential Hall of Famer in Patrick Peterson will help all of the Steelers’ defensive backs.
