The Penguins held a scrimmage yesterday and goaltender Tristan Jarry led “Team Yellow” to a 3-0 win over “Team Black”. Jason Zucker, new dad Colton Sceviour, and Bryan Rust scored the goals.
Coach Mike Sullivan says Jarry has worked hard to nail down the number-one goaltender position, which led to the trade of two- time Stanley Cup winner Matt Murray to Ottawa.
Sullivan spent some time yesterday talking about the Penguins goal of playing fast. He said it’s one of the Pens’ priorities.
Jake Guentzel returned from shoulder surgery to play in the team’s playoff series loss to Montreal, but he says he is in much better condition now, after a summer of work and rehab.
Guentzel says he likes the concept of playing teams in a two-game series format.
New defenseman Mike Matheson, who was the return in the Patric Hornqvist trade, says he is adjusting to the much faster style of play the Penguins use, in contrast to his former team, the Florida Panthers.
Matheson admitted he was losing confidence in his abilities in Florida, but he’s gaining his footing with the Pens and he and his teammates are working hard to get up to full speed in time for next Wednesday’s opener in Philadelphia.
Right wing Kasperi Kapanen remains stranded in Finland while he works on his visa issues, and forward Zach Aston-Reese remained out of workouts as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
