State Police are supporting efforts with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
In support of a national campaign to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving, State Police in Indiana County have placed a greater emphasis on detecting distracted drivers. This includes those who decide to text while driving. Pennsylvania Vehicle Code prohibits the driver of a vehicle to send, read or write text messages from any wireless communications device. The fine for violating this is $50.
State Police, the US Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises that if you’re expecting a text message or need to send one, pull over and park in a safe place. Once you’re off the road, and the vehicle is stopped, it’s safe to text. If you have a passenger, have them be the “designated texter” so that you can respond to text messages while you’re focused on the road. They also advise avoiding checking any social media while you’re driving and if you are addicted to texting, set the phone in the back seat or the trunk until you arrive at your destination.
