After Commonwealth Court ruled that funding to schools in Pennsylvania was “unconstitutional” and that it “must be reformed” back in February, Senate Republican leaders issued a joint statement earlier this week saying that they will not appeal the decision.
Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman and President Pro Tempore Kim Ward said the decision not to appeal came “after completing a thorough review” of the ruling. They add the ruling provides meaningful changes for Pennsylvania’s educational system in the 21st Century, and “engaging in a holistic approach which finds an appropriate balance between addressing the needs of students and respecting the ability of taxpayers to pay the costs is vital.”
Governor Shapiro said in his budget address in March that “It will take all of our ideas for not just how many dollars we set aside from the state for public education but how we drive those dollars out to local districts adequately and equitably.” The ruling spanned nearly 800 pages.
