Coach Mike Tomlin says don’t read too much into who lines up with the first team, or the second or third teams as training camp gets rolling at St. Vincent.
On the first day yesterday, veterans such as Cam Heyward, Diontae Johnson, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and many others did not get as much work as younger and newer players on the Steelers’ roster. Tomlin says he needs to get eyes on the new guys.
Tomlin says right now the Steelers are focused on the big picture.
Hall of Famer Rod Woodson was in Latrobe yesterday and got a look at the Steelers’ two rookie cornerbacks taken in this year’s draft, Joey Porter Jr. and Corey Trice Jr. They are two big, physical corners, and Woodson said they need to play aggressively. Tomlin says physicality will be a key for both of them.
Steelers general manager Omar Khan spoke to the media yesterday and said it’s no accident that the team will have as many as a dozen new starters this season.
Khan said the offseason roster makeover was a deliberate result of a plan developed by him, Tomlin, and team president Art Rooney II, with an eye toward winning in whatever way they can.
Khan was asked about comments by Najee Harris about how unfairly running backs are treated in the NFL, which has been a hot topic league-wide since the lowball contract offers made to Saquon Barkley and others. He said Harris has always been a valued team member.
Steelers executive Art Rooney Jr. and former Steelers coach Buddy Parker are on the list of finalists in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Coach/Contributor category for the Class of 2024. The other finalists are former Pitt star and Browns coach Marty Schottenheimer, Tom Coughlin, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, Frank “Bucko” Kilroy, Dan Reeves, Robert Kraft, Clark Shaughnessy, Lloyd Wells and John Wooten. As many as three can be voted in.
The Hall of Fame also announced 12 senior player candidates for the Class of 2024. Roger Craig, Ken Anderson, Maxie Baughan, Randy Gradishar, Joe Jacoby, Albert Lewis, Steve McMichael, Eddie Meador, Art Powell, Sterling Sharpe, Otis Taylor and Al Wistert all made the list. Only one can make it in.
