It’s reporting day at St. Vincent College today for Steelers players and all ninety players are expected to be there, including second round draft pick Joey Porter Jr., who yesterday agreed to a four-year rookie contract worth $9.618 million. It includes a signing bonus of just under $4 million and the first three years of the deal are guaranteed.
Porter was the 32nd overall selection in this year’s draft, and in a typical year that would have made him a first-round pick, with first-round money, but there were only 31 players taken in the first round this year because the league stripped the Miami Dolphins of their pick.
Reporting day at St. Vincent traditionally includes the annual conditioning test, which is a group of sprints back and forth across Chuck Noll Field. On a day with a predicted high temperature of 89 degrees, that run might be reduced somewhat.
NFL
- The Philadelphia Eagles signed former Steelers wide receiver Deon Cain yesterday and also worked out former Steelers special teams ace Marcus Allen, the linebacker/safety who played five seasons in Pittsburgh.
- Multiple reports say former Steelers cornerback Arthur Maulet has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
- The Chargers have signed Justin Herbert to a five-year extension worth $262.5 million, topping the deal signed by Lamar Jackson with the Ravens and making Herbert the highest-paid player in NFL history. That distinction will change when the Bengals eventually get around to signing their quarterback, Joe Burrow.
- Running back Saquon Barkley reported to camp with the New York Giants after signing a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. Barkley received the franchise tag from New York but was unable to agree to a long-term contract before last Monday’s deadline, so one year was the most for which he could sign.
