MLB insider Jon Heyman reported on Monday the Pirates are listening to offers for All-Star closer David Bednar, but he would be quote, “difficult to move,” prior to the Trade Deadline on August 1.
Bednar is under team control until 2027 and is the team’s most efficient reliever this season, sporting a 3-1 record with a 1.15 ERA in 38 appearances. He is also fifth in the NL with 18 saves.
Other Pirates rumored to be traded at the deadline are pitcher Rich Hill, catcher Austin Hedges, first basemen Carlos Santana and Ji Man Choi. Outfielder Andrew McCutchen has also come up as a potential candidate, but owner Bob Nutting said he is quote, “a Pirate as long as he wants.”
The Pirates also released infielder Drew Maggi Sunday evening. The journeyman made his MLB debut in April after spending more than 12 seasons in the minor leagues. He notched his first hit against Washington on April 29.
Maggi hit .181 in 36 games with Double-A Altoona this season before being placed on the development list earlier this month.
