There was a new left-hander on the mound for the Pirates yesterday but he only threw one pitch. It was the ceremonial first pitch tossed by Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith, who also used that left hand yesterday to sign a new four-year contract extension. Highsmith is locked up with the Steelers for the next five seasons for a reported $70.743 million, with $27.7 million guaranteed in the first two years.
Highsmith was sixth in the NFL in sacks last season, with 14-and-a-half. He had 68 tackles, 38 of them solo, and led the team with five strip sacks. He will report to St. Vincent along with his Steelers teammates, including fellow outside backer TJ Watt, for the start of training camp next Wednesday. Coach Mike Tomlin has called Highsmith “Robin” to Watt’s “Batman”.
