While it may not look like it right now, Indiana will probably see a white Christmas and that has PennDOT concerned about driving conditions through the next two days.
The National Weather Service announced a winter weather advisory that will go into effect at 7:00 tonight and will remain in effect until 1:00 PM on Christmas Day on Friday. Four to six inches of snow are expected during that time, but the rain that’s anticipated before the snow starts could complicate things further. PennDOT says that road crews normally do not pre-treat roads with their salt brine when rain is expected before snow, as the rain will generally wash the salt brine off the roads.
PennDOT says that they have plenty of salt and anti-skid materials and the plow trucks are also ready for tonight, and crews are ready to work around the clock if necessary to make sure roads are passible.
PennDOT says that people should be aware of black ice on roads that look just like they’re wet. Drivers are asked to be extra cautious if they have to go out tonight. They ask that people travel slowly at speeds appropriate to the conditions, stay in your lane and increase following distance so you don’t rear-end anyone on an icy road. They also advise you to stay alert and reduce in-car distractions to make sure you pay attention to the road conditions. Also, make sure that you have an emergency kit optimized for the winter.
PennDOT reminds drivers that they can check road conditions by logging on to www.511pa.com or using the 511 PA app before you leave.
