The Penguins continued to fill in the blanks on their roster for training camp, which will begin on September 18th.
Over the weekend, the team announced the signing of defenseman Ty Smith, the 23-year-old former Devils first round draft choice acquired in the John Marino trade last year. He had a goal and four assists in nine games with the Penguins and played most of the season playing for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.
On Friday, they signed forward Jonathan Gruden, who played three games with no points for the Pens last season. He came to Pittsburgh from Ottawa in the Matt Murray trade in 2020.
The Pens also on Friday signed Emil Pieniemi, an 18-year-old defenseman who was the team’s third round draft pick last month. He signed a three-year entry level contract. Pieniemi had said after the draft he intends to play in his native Finland this season, which could push his new contract back a year.
