The Penguins have signed restricted free agent defenseman Ty Smith on a one-year $775,000 contract.
The 23-year-old 2018 first round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, Smith was acquired in the John Marino trade in July of last year. He spent most of the 2022-23 season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL, playing nine games with the Penguins with a goal and four assists.
Smith’s signing leaves only forward Drew O’Connor’s contract still to be dealt with. Also a restricted free agent, O’Connor is scheduled for an arbitration hearing on August 4th.
Goaltender Filip Lindberg and forward Filip Hallander are also restricted free agents whose NHL rights were retained by the Penguins, but they have both signed to play next season in their native European countries.
