State police say quick thinking by a northern Indiana County woman saved her from falling victim to a scammer last week.
26-year-old Jenna Wright of Rochester Mills, who lives along Wright Road in Canoe Township, arranged to sell a saddle to a man who paid with a U.S. Postal Service money order, but she became suspicious last Wednesday when the money order was made out for more than the agreed-upon purchase price. She took the money order to the state police barracks in Punxsutawney, and they say that while it looked “very authentic”, it was phony.
Police say that had Wright attempted to deposit the counterfeit money order, she would have been subject to penalties days later when it did not clear. Meanwhile, the suspect would have picked up the saddle by then and would have had her pay him the difference between the purchase price and the amount of the money order.
The suspect used the name “Joshua Kigler”, but police say they suspect it’s a fake name.
