The PIAA is considering relaxing the 15-practice requirement for winter sports.
The Tribune Review reports that the board will meet Tuesday would consider relaxing the requirement, making the minimum number of practices 10. The proposal states that with schools in many parts of the state starting athletics up again in late January, if the 15-practice rule is adhered to, there may not be much of a season. If the waiver to the rule is passed, the number of practices completed before the pandemic shutdown would be included in that total. For example, if a team completed three practices before Governor Wolf’s shutdown, seven practices would be needed before a team could start their season.
Exceptions would include rifle, bowling, swimming or any sport that requires off-campus training. In those cases, five practices would be needed.
The statewide “pause” to interscholastic sports is expected to end January 4th, provided there are no extensions.
