The Pro Football Hall of Fame yesterday announced a group of sixty senior players and coach/contributors who have advanced for consideration for induction at Canton. Two of them have connections to the Steelers: Art Rooney Jr. and former head coach Buddy Parker.
Rooney scouted for the Steelers from 1964 to 1986 and remains on the Steelers’ board of directors today. Parker, who died in 1982, coached the Steelers from 1957 to 1964 after stints coaching the Chicago Cardinals and Detroit Lions. He pioneered the concept of the two-minute offense.
The Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee named 31 semifinalists, all of whom played their last NFL game no later than 1998. Twenty-nine coach/contributor semifinalists were selected. The committees will each name twelve finalists in each category, revealing those names on July 27th. One senior player and as many as three coach/contributors can be enshrined each year.
