As the first major snowstorm of the winter season is set to hit our area tomorrow, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is offering some tips on how people can stay safe during storm related power outages.
PUC Chairman Gladys Brown Dutrieuille said that the combination of snow, ice, high winds and falling temperatures has the potential to disrupt utility service, so the commission is recommending that people prepare by doing the following:
- Know the hotline numbers and websites for your utility providers. These are usually on the monthly bills for your gas and electric companies.
- Keep your cell phone charged so you can contact your utility companies
- Keep necessary food, medicine and other supplies on hand.
If you do lose power:
- Call the utility hotline, not 911, to report the outage. The commission says you should always report the outage, even if you think others already have.
- Stay clear of wires, puddles or objects touching power lines, including tree branches.
- Use a generator only if you can do so safely.
- Leave a light on, so you know when power is restored.
- Check on elderly neighbors or those with special needs.
The PUC has posted a video on their YouTube channel highlighting storm outage safety tips. You can find that video below.
