In college basketball action the Pitt Panthers are getting set for tomorrow night’s ACC opener in Miami against the Hurricanes.
The Panthers are on a four-game winning streak, with Justin Champagnie recording two straight games with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. Coach Jeff Capel is giving his freshmen significant playing time and says the Panthers continue to be a work in progress.
Capel might be adding some quality depth to his roster tomorrow as the NCAA is expected to announce that transfer athletes are immediately eligible to play. Miami of Ohio transfer guard Nike Sibande has been practicing with the Panthers and is ready to play. The 6-4 senior scored 1,463 points with 186 three-pointers in three years at Miami. The NCAA announcement is expected to come at 5 PM tomorrow and the game tips off at 6 o’clock on WCCS.
Jim Phillips, the former Vice President for Athletics and Recreation at Northwestern University has been named the new commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC says Phillips will begin his new role in February. Current commissioner, John Swofford, announced his retirement earlier this year after nearly 25 years with the conference.
This week’s NCAA Top 25 has the same order for the top five. Gonzaga is number one, followed by Baylor, Iowa, Michigan State, and Kansas. Houston, Villanova, West Virginia, Creighton, and Tennessee make up the rest of the top ten.
