Those looking to take part in Amazon’s Prime Day event are urged to be on the lookout for potential scams.
Experts say criminals look to capitalize on the annual two-day sales event by impersonating Amazon representatives to steal money. They do this by sending unsolicited texts/phone calls, emails saying there are issues with one’s Amazon Prime account, and false order confirmations.
According to a graphic posted by Amazon, less than 20 percent of Pennsylvania residents are obsessed with shopping on the website. In general, 33 percent of Gen Xers shop on Amazon one or more times during the week. The same percentage of Amazon Prime members also shop on Amazon at least once per week.
Officials with the Better Business Bureau remind shoppers to never click a link if you’re not 100 percent confident that it came from Amazon and to keep track of what items were ordered and when they’ll arrive.
If you fall victim to these types of scams, or scams in general, contact the Indiana County Sheriff’s Office at (724) 465-3930, or your local police department.
