The Steelers started the season with a celebrated linebacking corps of TJ Watt, Bud Dupree, Devin Bush, and Vince Williams. On Sunday, only Watt will be on the field from that group, after Williams was placed on the team’s reserve/covid-19 list. Dupree and Bush were already gone with season-ending knee injuries and Bush’s replacement, Robert Spillane, suffered a knee injury Monday that will likely keep him out multiple games. The only inside linebackers currently on the roster are Avery Williamson and converted safety Marcus Allen.
In addition to Williams, center Maurkice Pouncey remains on the covid list with a game against AFC East-leading Buffalo coming on Sunday night.
Wide receiver Chase Claypool missed practice due to illness yesterday and cornerback Joe Haden remained in concussion protocol. Defensive end Chris Wormley returned from illness and kicker Chris Boswell was back after his hip injury.
Saying Vance McDonald has “a heart of gold and a passion for helping those in need,”, the Steelers made the tight end their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. McDonald works with “Convoy of Hope”, a faith-based non-profit that feeds people and responds to disasters around the world, with a special emphasis on children. With the Steelers organization, he also is a part of “Huddle for the Holidays” and “Trucks of Hope”.
