The identity of the victim in a shooting that involved a state trooper has been released.
According to Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman, Jr., 51-year-old John Vincent Dye of Homer City was shot by police after a chase through Center Township and Homer City Borough that started at 11:55 PM Sunday night. Police said that troopers were trying to pull him over in the area of Lockard Avenue Extension and Yankeetown Road when Dye allegedly fled, leading police on the chase.
After an attempt to stop him with a spike strip failed, the chase came to an end on Route 119 near Tide Road where the trooper-involved shooting took place. Dye was hit during the shooting and while police tried to render aid, he died on the scene.
Overman pronounced him dead at 12:29 AM Monday due to gunshot wounds. The manner of his death is still pending as the investigation by the Troop A Major Crimes Unit and the Indiana County District Attorney’s office is ongoing. Autopsy and toxicology reports are also pending.
