The PIAA yesterday decided that the winter sports seasons will go on as scheduled, while allowing for adjustments that will give schools a way to get a full season in if they are delayed. The Pennsylvania Principals Association sent a letter yesterday morning asking the PIAA to put winter sports on hold.
Schools will still be eligible for the playoffs if they do not get their entire season in; they can schedule regular season games after the playoffs begin; and there are new regulations for return-to-competition if they are forced to stop playing…if a team closes down for seven days, they have to practice twice before they can play a game; if they are down for 10 straight days, they have to practice three times; if it’s 14 consecutive days, they have to practice four times before they can play a game.
The state basketball playoffs will include only district champions; the swimming playoffs are cut in half, to 16 qualifiers in each event; and the wrestling tournament will include only district champions, with an additional “super regional” round to reduce the championship field to eight wrestlers in AA and AAA.
Heritage Conference AD’s met yesterday to discuss winter sports schedules and District 6 is scheduled to meet today. Heritage Conference President Jody Rainey will join us on Indiana In the Morning on WCCS tomorrow morning at 8:10 to talk about the winter sports seasons.
