The Panthers’ basketball team upended Northwestern last night, 71-70, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It was Pitt’s first road game of the season and came against a Wildcats team that had scored more than a hundred points in its first two games.
Justin Champagnie scored 20 points and had 20 rebounds for Pitt. He ripped down the 20th rebound after a missed Northwestern free throw, got the outlet pass to Xavier Johnson, and then got the return pass and the game-winning dunk with 5.6 seconds left.
Johnson finished with 21 points and Au’Diese Toney scored 18.
Coach Jeff Capel said his defense came through on a night when the offense stumbled in the first half.
Capel said his team had a lot of issues going into the game, but they hung together to get a very important win.
Pitt takes to the floor again on Saturday against Gardner Webb at the Petersen Events Center. The game has been switched to a 4 PM start.
In college football, Pitt is at Georgia Tech tonight. The Panthers are 5-and-5 on the season. Georgia Tech enters play at 3-and-6. Kickoff on WCCS is at 7 PM.
