Former Major League Baseball star and Wampum,Pa. native Dick Allen has passed at the age of 78.
Allen was a seven-time All-Star, was the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year and was the 1972 American League MVP. A number of baseball historians regard him as the best player not inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He batted .292 with 351 home runs and 1,119 runs batted in.
Allen played nine seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, who retired his No. 15, and played with five other teams during his 15 years in the league, finishing his career in June 1977 with the Oakland Athletics.
