A post-sentence motions hearing is set for today for a man accused of killing his mother in 2015.
Court documents say that the hearing is for 42-year-old Todd Walters. He was sentenced to 15 to 40 years in State Prison in March of 2020 for a charge of murder in the third degree. Police say in the early morning hours of February 20th, 2015, Walters beat his mother, 72-year-old retired IUP Professor Ruth Shirey, at her home on Diamond Avenue and drove her car to Altoona where he was later arrested.
Shirey died at Indiana Regional Medical Center from injuries suffered in the incident. It was reported that Walters had a history of mental illness and had stopped taking his medication prior to the attack on his mother. Since he was taken into custody, Walters had many mental health evaluations.
