Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was in a better frame of mind yesterday as he talked about the team’s performance in Wednesday’s win over Baltimore and turned his focus on Monday’s game against Washington.
One of the highest priorities will be preparing rookie outside linebacker Alex Highsmith to become the starter in place of Bud Dupree, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Wednesday.
Tomlin says that just as other young players have been called upon to play key roles, Highsmith is going to have to answer the call.
Dupree was not the only player injured on Wednesday. Tomlin said cornerback Steven Nelson was having an MRI on his knee yesterday. Nelson did return to the game after being injured.
The Steelers put Dupree on injured reserve and activated rookie 6th-round draft pick safety Antoine Brooks Jr. from the practice squad.
Tomlin says he used a lot of players on the defensive rotation on Wednesday because the team is playing three games in 12 days.
Tomlin did not have any new information on the players on the Steelers’ Reserve/Covid-19 list, which includes starters James Conner, Stephon Tuitt, and Maurkice Pouncey.
