The unemployment rate for Indiana County increased in the month of May.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for the county went up by three-tenths of a percentage point to 4.5 percent last month. On the state level, unemployment levels dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 4.0 percent, while the national level is currently at 3.7 percent.
Westmoreland County’s rate is at 3.8 percent, Jefferson is at 4.1, Armstrong ties with Indiana at 4.5, Clearfield is 4.6 percent and Cambria is the highest in the region at 4.7 percent.
The lowest unemployment rate in the state is Chester County at 2.7 percent while the highest is Forest County at 6.0 percent.
Jobs in government showed a seasonal decrease of 900 over the month. The decrease in government was all in state government because of the start of summer break. The other eight of the nine published super sectors of the local area were essentially unchanged since April.
