Today is Small Business Saturday in Downtown Indiana.
The event, which began in 2010 by American Express, gives area shoppers the opportunity to continue their holiday shopping at local businesses, rather than large retail establishments.
Downtown Indiana Executive Director Linda Mitchell said that the celebration is something both she and local residents look forward to each year.
More than 19 stores and restaurants in downtown Indiana are taking part in the event, and those who shop at participating businesses will receive 10 percent of their purchase back in “Downtown Dollars.”
Mitchell adds that “Downtown Dollars” works similar to cash.
The Small Business Saturday initiative has been incorporated into this weekend’s First Commonwealth Bank “It’s a Wonderful Life” Festival in Downtown Indiana, and certain stores have extended hours of operation to ensure customers have enough time to complete their holiday shopping.
Event coordinators would like to remind that all participants must follow current health regulations when visiting these businesses.
