State police are investigating a rash of car burglaries in the Saltsburg/Conemaugh Township area, and all four of them were of vehicles that were left unlocked. Two of the thefts involve handguns.
Sometime between Monday and Wednesday of this week, a thief got into a pickup truck on High Street in Conemaugh Township and stole a loaded handgun and two magazines loaded with ten cartridges each. A wallet carrying $243 in cash plus credit cards and a pair of Oakley sunglasses were also taken. The gun is a black 9-millimeter Springfield XDS in a black Kydex holster. The total value of the theft is $793.
Another theft took place overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, and involved another pickup truck parked on High Street, this time in Saltsburg Borough. The thief took a semi-automatic handgun, a black-and-silver air compressor in a black carrying case, a checkbook, and a fifteen-pack of Miller Lite beer. The gun is a two-tone Century Arms 9×18mm Makarov-style weapon with a black slide and a silver frame, bearing serial number 4427. The total value of the theft is $296.
The victims are a 39-year-old man and a 30-year-old man.
Police do not provide reports on the other two vehicle break-ins.
Residents are reminded to secure their vehicles, keep valuables out of view, and avoid storing firearms in unattended vehicles. Anyone with information on any of the thefts is urged to call either Trooper Moffa or Trooper Loughner at the state police barracks in Indiana, at 357-1998.
