The Pirates announced that one of their starters will be out for a year as he recovers from elbow surgery.
Starting right-handed pitcher Vince Velazquez is out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to address the ulnar collateral ligament in right elbow. On Friday, Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said the surgery was done by the same doctor who repaired Ben Roethlisberger’s throwing arm in 2019.
The doctor said Velazquez will be able to return to competition in 11-12 months. The last game action he saw was on May 27th in a start against the Seattle Mariners.
