On Monday night, the Pirates had a six-game winning streak, they were in first place in the NL Central, and two games left against the worst team in baseball. Today, they have a two-game losing streak and they’re a game-and-a-half in back of the Brewers after the Oakland A’s pounded Pirates pitchers for the second straight game. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates defense was about the only thing working yesterday.
Shelton says he saw no reason to keep Roansy Contreras in the game after he’d thrown so many pitches and gotten only one out.
Shelton says there are some painful lessons for Contreras after his poor start.
The Pirates are off today and welcome the New York Mets to PNC Park tomorrow night as their nine-game homestand continues.
Checking the Pirates’ prospect beat, Henry Davis had his first Triple-A hit last night, a triple in the Indianapolis’s 9-7 loss to Omaha. He also had another walk, and played right field. Endy Rodriguez caught and had two hits, including a double. Newly-acquired shortstop Alika Williams was 1-for-4 with a double and top pitching prospect Quinn Priester had his first rough outing in quite a while, giving up four runs in five innings.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona’s hitters were shut down by Richmond, which beat the Curve 6-1. Chavez Young, newly arrived from Indianapolis, had two of the five Altoona hits.
Jared Jones pitches for the Curve tonight.
