PennDOT has opened online pre-registration for those wishing a new Real ID-compliant Driver’s License.
Those who obtained their first driver’s license or photo ID card after September of 2003 will be able to pre-register. Starting today, postcards will come to those who are eligible for the pre-registration directing them to log on to PennDOT’s website, http://www.dmv.pa.gov/REALID/Pages/REAL-ID-Pre-Verification.aspx. Once pre-verification is complete, PennDOT will review the customer’s record and verifiy the documents they have on file, and then follow up with the applicant if they need any other additional documents. Once all documents have been verified, the applicant will be able to purchase the new Real ID license or ID card when it is implemented in Spring of 2019.
If a customer does not qualify for the pre-verification process, then they have to bring their documents to a PennDOT license center starting in September of this year to begin the pre-verification process.
PennDOT reminds everyone that Real ID is the federally-accepted form of Identification that will allow those who carry them to use as Legal ID’s to enter federal buildings and fly commercially. Pennsylvania law prohibited PennDOT from joining the Real ID program until Governor Wolf repealed the law last year.
