The Indiana School Board is set to meet on Monday, February 26th and the elimination of the Summit Learning program is on the agenda once again.
During Monday’s meeting, the Summit Learning Program will be part of the Superintendent’s report, but the details of what will be discussed at that point are not known. The program will be brought up again twice later in the meeting, as the board has on the agenda a motion that was tabled from their January 29th board meeting that would authorize eight members of the Junior High School Staff to go to the Summit Learning Spring Conference in Maryland. That motion may be a moot point as prior to that, there is a motion that is being proposed that would end the Summit Platform’s use for all grade levels in the 2018-2019 school year.
The Summit Platform has come under fire in the district, as many parents of sixth graders in the Junior High have spoken out against its use. The program is an online-teaching tool that was rolled out for this school year, but parents are saying that children are spending too much time on the computer in the classroom. The program was also criticized as its introduction was done very quietly in the district without parental input or notification.
Also on the agenda for Monday’s meeting is a motion for the board to instruct the administration to secure proposals to conduct and complete a thorough safety and security check for all the district buildings, and a motion for the board to discuss the current policy for responding to letters and emails from the public.
