The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection yesterday awarded more than $1 million in Environmental Education Grants to 73 projects across the state, and some of that money will come to Indiana County.
According to a news release, the Indiana County Conservation District is set to receive $8,955 that will go towards education principles and public outreach efforts. The initiative will incorporate “current and relevant” climate change and water quality information, hands-on materials, engaging activities, age-appropriate lessons, and in-person workshops.
Acting DEP Secretary Rich Negrin said 83 percent of grant funding supports educational projects that will benefit environmental justice communities as the department continues to expand work to help Pennsylvanians most at risk from pollution, climate change-related hazards, and other environmental impacts.
The program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which mandates setting 5 percent of pollution fines and penalty collections for environmental education in the state.
