The Pirates got back to .500 with a win last night in San Francisco, and this afternoon they will have the chance to enter into June either a game over .500 or a game under. Joe Block recaps last night’s win.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Bucs were relieved to get the win, even if it was in an unconventional way.
Connor Joe started at first base for the second straight game as Carlos Santana was not yet ready to go due to his stiff back. Joe says the Pirates played well and needed the win.
Johan Oviedo had to scrape and claw to get through four-and-a-third innings. He gave up three hits and walked five, but still only surrendered one run. He says he was trying his hardest to keep the Pirates in the game.
The Pirates will have tomorrow off and start a nine-game homestand on Friday with the first of three games against NL Central Division rival St. Louis. Oakland and the New York Mets follow the Cardinals into Pittsburgh.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona got beat up by Binghampton last night, 10-3. The Curve’s Connor Scott was 3-for-4 with a triple and a double and Matt Gorski also was 3-for-4, with a double. Andres Alvarez hit his fifth home run of the season.
Game two of the series is tonight at PNG Field, with the Curve sending right-hander Kyle Nicolas to the mound.
