Pirates GM Ben Cherington says the team is going to “keep the door cracked” open for Chris Archer to return after they declined to pick up his $11 million option and made him a free agent over the weekend. Cherington said the team was not comfortable committing to the $11 million figure this early in the offseason, given Archer’s ongoing recovery from surgery for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, which caused him to miss the entire 2020 season.
The individual Gold Glove awards will be announced tonight by Major League Baseball. The Pirates’ Adam Frazier is a finalist at second base, while Jacob Stallings is a finalist at catcher. Since the awards this years are based solely on analytics, Stallings is a favorite.
MLB’s Most Valuable Player Award finalists are out. In the National League, they are the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts, the Braves’ Freddie Freeman and the Padres’ Manny Machado. In the AL, the finalists are the White Sox’ Jose Abreu, the Yankees’ D.J. LeMahieu and the Indians’ Jose Ramirez.
The NL Cy Young finalists are Trevor Bauer of the Reds, the Cubs’ Yu Darvish and the Mets’ Jacob deGrom. In the AL, they are Cleveland’s Shane Bieber, the Twins’ Kenta Maeda and the Blue Hays’ Hyun Jin Ryu.
NL Rookie of the Year finalists are the Phillies’ Alec Bohm, the Padres’ Jake Cronenworth, and the Brewers’ Devin Williams. In the Al, the finalists are the Astros’ Cristian Javier, the Mariners’ Kyle Lewis, and the White Sox’ Luis Robert.
For Manager of the Year, the finalists in the American league include the White Sox’ Rick Renteria (who was fired after the season), the Rays’ Kevin Cash, and the Blue Jays’ Charlie Motoyo. National League finalists are Don Mattingly of the Marlins, David Ross of the Cubs, and Jayce Tingler of the Padres.
