IUP’s faculty union plans two “rallies against retrenchment” today and tomorrow in the Oak Grove, with the deadline for official notification coming on Friday.
On Indiana In the Morning on WCCS yesterday, IUP APSCUF president Erika Frenzel said the rallies will be informal, with those who wish to speak being given the opportunity.
Frenzel says the faculty union’s objections stem from an accelerated retrenchment schedule announced by the State System, which will slash the faculty rolls.
She adds that other schools in the System already have a much lower faculty-to-student ratio, making it even harder to accept. The union disputes the use of the State System’s highest enrollment period, 2010/2011, to calculate the ratio. Frenzel contends they should not use an “anomaly year” as their baseline. She says that the issue of retrenchment should have been a part of the most recent contract negotiations in 2019.
The rallies are planned today from noon to 2 PM and tomorrow from 3:30 to 5 PM, with the theme “How will you grow if we go?”
