Three more cases of Covid-19 have been reported at the Indiana Senior High School but operations are continuing as scheduled.
On Wednesday, the district was alerted that another student at the Senior High was identified as a positive case for Covid-19, marking the second confirmed case in a week at Indiana High School. According to a letter from Superintendent Michael Vuckovich, there were two other students that were reported positive and/or presumed positive by the PA Department of Health, bringing the total to four cases over a two week period.
The board-approved Health and Safety Plan could require the school to close for two weeks and shift all classes at the senior high to a virtual format, but after a conversation with the PA Department of Health, high school administrators and school health offices, Vuckovich decided to keep the school open at this time. The reasons why include:
- The students are in different cohorts, so they are attending class on different days.
- The cases were not connected with one another as the students were not in the same cohort, nor were they involved in any of the same extracurricular activities.
- It still falls within the range that schools would still be allowed to be open
- The report came in on Wednesday, when no students were on campus, and crews were performing their mid-week deep clean of the school.
- Two of the students were “community” cases and not counted towards the school’s total as per the Department of Health.
Vuckovich added that if the school was fully opened instead of working under the current hybrid model, the school would possibly have to close for up to 14 days.
