One IUP team is still playing as the 2022-23 seasons wind up.
Men’s golf tees off today in the NCAA Division II championship at Avalon Lakes Golf Club in Warren, Ohio. Twenty teams will compete along with eight qualifying individuals. All of the teams will play 54 holes of stroke play through Wednesday, when the individual champion will be crowned, and then the field will be cut to eight teams in head-to-head match play through Friday. IUP qualified as the number three team out of the Atlantic/East Regional.
BASKETBALL
There is basketball news out of IUP. Jack Benedict tells us that Craig Carey will be named head coach of the women’s team for a second season after leading the Crimson Hawks to an 18-10 finish in his first year at the helm.
Carey is also getting some reinforcements, including two transfers. Women’s signees include 6-foot center Grace Centrulla, who led Mercyhurst in scoring last season at 11.45 points per game and also averaged 5.93 rebounds.
Also coming to IUP will be 5-11 forward Nyshae’ Weaver, a transfer from Alderson Broadus, and 5-9 Elena Benito, from Santander, Spain.
For the IUP men, coach Joe Lombardi will welcome 6-8 forward Gabe Romero-Sanz, who played in England last season; Denzel Kabasele, a 6-3 guard from Lancaster Catholic who played last year at Miles Community College in Montana.
Other news involving IUP basketball, forward Tomiwa Sulaiman, who entered the transfer portal after the season and left the IUP program, has de-committed from Bryant.
