Strengthening Pennsylvania’s hate crime law was the focus of a recent hearing held by the Senate Majority Policy Committee.
The committee heard support for strengthening the state’s hate crime law by including crimes based a person’s sexual orientation, gender or gender identity. Others urged lawmakers to pass legislation adding intellectual and developmental disabilities to the items that could be considered when thinking about charging someone with a hate crime. Officials say hate crimes are on the rise, having reached a 16 year high.
