The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced today that the state’s unemployment rate went down in September.
The state’s unemployment rate was at 8.1 percent for September, a drop of 2.3 percentage points from August. This brings it more in line with the federal unemployment rate, which went down by half a percentage point to 7.9 percent. Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force, which is the estimated number of residents working or looking for work, went up 52,000 over the month. The unemployment count fell by 141,000 while employment rose by 194,000.
Non-farm jobs were up 19,400 in September to 5,597,800 jobs. Jobs increased in 9 of the 11 industry super sectors over the month, with the largest gain in the area of leisure and hospitality. Over the last five months, the state has recovered 54.2 percent of the total non-farm jobs lost in March and April at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
