The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey tweeted yesterday that the Pirates have decided to bring back their entire Major League coaching staff for another season.
The Bucs last week made a number of front office moves, firing strength coach Jim Malone, head athletic trainer Bryan Housand, and senior advisor Nick Leyva. Also this offseason, the Pirates reassigned minor league operations chief Larry Broadway.
In the National League championship series last night, the Atlanta Braves jumped out to a 7-0 lead and had to hold on at the end for an 8-7 win over the Didgers. The Braves lead the series 2-0. Former Pirate Mark Melancon got A.J. Pollock on a game-ending groundout with the tying run on third in the 9th inning. Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies homered for Atlanta.
Tony Gonsolin started for LA after Clayton Kershaw suffered back spasms and had to be scratched from the start. Julio Urias starts tonight for the Dodgers against the Braves’ Kyle Wright.
In the American League, Tampa Bay is just one win away from the World Series. The Rays beat Houston 5-2 to take a 3-0 series lead. The Rays scored all five of their runs in the 6th inning as Joey Wendle and Hunter Renfroe each drove in two. Wendle’s single put the Rays up for good.
