State police, the Indiana County Commissioners and the county court administrator’s office are warning people about another scam that relies on surprising and shocking people into acting without thinking.
Troopers say that as of yesterday afternoon, five people contacted the court administrator’s office saying that they received a phone call from an unknown person threatening them with fines or arrest for failure to show up for jury duty. Thankfully no money was lost in these cases. This follows several other phone-related scams that try to panic the victims into giving either personal banking information over the phone or asking for payment in the form of gift cards or pre-loaded debit cards.
Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to report it to their local law enforcement agency. Residents may also contact the county Court Administrator’s office at 724-465-3955 to report it. Troopers also advise people to discuss this along with other common scams with their family members to make sure they are well informed, and to verify the legitimacy of suspicious phone calls, texts or emails before acting on them.
Additional information about jury duty service and procedures can be found on the county’s website.
