IUP has announced the finalized enrollment numbers for the 2020-21 school year, and it shows that overall enrollment has dropped once again.
In a news release, the university announced that enrollment is at 10,067, which represents a 5.34 percent decrease in enrollment from 2019-2020. The university is touting that the fall 2020 enrollment exceeds university projections and reflects a stronger persistence rate for continuing undergraduates. The persistence rate is the rate that sophomores and juniors who continue studying in the university from year to year.
The university also said that they saw a 2.5% increase in the number of freshmen who applied, were accepted and then enrolled at IUP for the fall 2020 semester. The reported freshmen population for 2020-21 is 1,817. IUP also said that the entire freshman class had an average GPA of 3.40, with a total of 133 freshmen graduating from high school in the top 10 percent of their class, and 29 valedictorians or salutatorians. That represents an increase in each of those categories over last school year.
In the announcement, IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said that before the pandemic hit, they did anticipate a drop in enrollment, and when the pandemic hit, they adjusted their projections. Driscoll said that the university exceeded those new projections.
