BASEBALL
Indiana opens the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs this evening at Latrobe against Laurel Highlands. Indiana is 13-7 this season and the Mustangs are 9-9. Indiana beat Laurel Highlands, 2-0 in their only meeting of the season on April 14th. Indiana had 6 hits in the game, with Gavin Homer leading the way with two hits including a double. Garrison Dougherty, Connor Geesey, and Andrew McGee threw a combined four-hitter for the Indians, walking five and striking out five.
Indiana coach Bill Thompson says having already played the Mustangs once helps.
The game airs on WDAD, 100.3 FM, 1450 AM, wdadradio.com, and the TribLive High School Sports Network starting at 6:15.
DISTRICT 6
District 6 baseball and softball matchups were released yesterday, and the baseball Double-A bracket includes four Heritage Conference teams. Conference champion Marion Center grabbed the number three seed and will host number six West Branch on Friday at 4 o’clock. Number seven Homer-Center will visit number two Mount Union on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon. Number eight United makes the long trip to top seed Bald Eagle at 4, and number four Northern Cambria hosts number five Richland at 4.
In Class A, number 8 Portage will host number nine Bishop Carroll in a play-in game tomorrow.
SOFTBALL
The Double-A softball brackets features four Heritage Conference teams, including Conference champ West Shamokin, which will be the number three seed and host Southern Huntingdon on Monday afternoon. Also on Monday, number four Marion Center will play number five Cambria Heights, and number 8 Homer-Center will visit number one Bald Eagle Area.
LACROSSE
Indiana advances to the second round of the WPIAL playoffs with a 10-8 win over Moon. Gianna Brody and Kyla Weaver each scored three goals and Lucia Clark had two. Kayla Leon and Brynlee Schawl also scored goals. Indiana’s defense led by Ava Elliott, Lelise Allison, Sara Fisher and Addie Lockard shut down Moon’s offense, while goalie Anna Buterbaugh had four saves.
Sixth-seeded Indiana will play next on Thursday at number three Blackhawk, which had a first round bye.
