The trial for a drifter charged with killing an Indiana woman back in 1991 is scheduled to start today.
67-year-old Charles Cook is scheduled to go before a jury and Indiana County President Judge William Martin for his trial on charges of criminal homicide and robbery. Cook is accused of shooting and killing Mrytle McGill on December 7th of 1991. Cook had been in prison on drug charges, but was paroled in 1991, but did not report in. That was when he allegedly shot McGill through the window of her home in White Township and took her car. McGill’s car was found at a Greyhound bus station in Pittsburgh.
DNA evidence that matched Cook was found on a cigarette butt inside of her car. Cook was found in 2016 in Mankato, Minnesota, where he was found living as a transient and posing as a homeless Vietnam war veteran. He was extradited back to Indiana County and has been in Indiana County Jail since 2017.
Since then, the case has gone before the State Supreme Court, who ruled that statements that Cook made to a patient at a mental health facility in Minnesota after his arrest are admissible.
