The faculty union at the State System of Higher Education says faculty layoffs – known as retrenchment – are being discussed at seven of the state-owned universities, and IUP is one of them.
APSCUF is planning an event tomorrow from 3 to 4 PM to answer students’ questions about possible layoffs at IUP, California, Cheyney, Clarion, Edinboro, Lock Haven and Mansfield. The union says the town hall event is exclusively for students and student journalists.
APSCUF says the State System wants to return to the student/faculty ratio of 2010-2011, when the union says there was an enrollment bubble that resulted in freshmen being packed into auditoriums instead of classrooms and faculty members did not know their students as well as in previous years.
The union says the State System has issued retrenchment warnings to ten of its fourteen schools, and it’s asking students and faculty members from 2010-11 to tell about their experiences with the larger class sizes.
The State System has not issued any public statements about retrenchment.
