Yesterday was the first day of rookie mini-camp for the Steelers. This included the first official workout with the team for Joey Porter, Jr., the son of the former Steeler Linebacker and Coach. Porter, Jr. said he got a little emotional on that first day, after having been there so many times with his father, and said it took him about three minutes to get out on the field as he spent much of the time looking at the locker. He along with six other draft picks, six undrafted rookies, five players from last year’s practice squad and 33 others were in attendance on a tryout basis.
In other Steelers news, the team signed four of their draft picks yesterday to four-year rookie contracts including Darnell Washington, Nick Herbig, Cory Trice and Spencer Anderson. The team is still working on signing their top three draft picks, including Porter, Keeanu Benton, and the Steelers first round pick Broderick Jones. Six undrafted free agents also signed contracts with the black and gold on Friday, including quarterback Tanner Morgan, kicker B.T. Potter, wide receiver Jordan Byrd, fullback Monte Pottebaum, linebacker David Perales and defensive end James Nyamwaya.
