Following a series of legal moves late last week, the trial of Charles Cook for the 1991 murder of Myrtle McGill is scheduled to begin. Jury jury selection is slated for tomorrow, although his criminal docket sheet also continues to list a start date of October 5th.
A drifter from eastern Pennsylvania, Cook is accused of shooting McGill through her kitchen window and then stealing her car. He was identified as a suspect in 2007 and finally located in Mankato, Minnesota in 2016, where he was living as a transient and posing as a homeless Vietnam veteran.
The case is finally ready for trial after a stop in state Superior Court, which ruled that statements he made to another patient at a mental health facility in Minnesota after his arrest are admissible. On Friday, Cook’s attorney filed a request for a subpoena and prosecutors filed their requests for jury instructions. The week also featured a number of other legal moves and a pre-trial conference before President Judge William Martin.
