Multiple national sources say the Penguins and Florida Panthers have worked out a swap of Pens’ winger Patric Hornqvist for Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson, but the deal has stalled because of Hornqvist’s no-trade clause and an insurance issue.
The 33-year-old Hornqvist has spent the past six seasons with Pittsburgh, and has been often injured, but he is a tremendous presence in front of the net and is extremely popular in Pittsburgh. He has three years left on his contract, which pays him an average annual salary of $5.3 million.
Matheson is 26, and was the Panthers 2012 first-round draft pick. He’s a lefty-shooting blue-liner with six years left on his contract at an average annual salary of $4.85 million.
