The Pirates’ Steven Brault turned in another brilliant pitching performance, but it was his catcher, Jacob Stallings who ended up being the hero. Stallings hit a walk-off solo home run as the Pirates beat the Cubs 3-2 in Pittsburgh. Erik Gonzalez and Adam Frazier both hit run-scoring doubles to put the Bucs ahead 2-0. Steven Brault pitched seven shutout innings, but earned a no decision. Richard Rodriguez earned the win in relief.
The Bucs will send Trevor Williams to the mound, sporting a 1-and-8 record with a 6.70 ERA (6:40 airtime on WCCS. 7:05 first pitch). He’ll be matched up against sinker baller Kyle Hendricks, who has a 2.93 ERA.
There is distressing news out of the Dominican Republic, where police are investigating a possible DUI accident that killed three people. Pirates’ top prospect Oneil Cruz was one of the drivers and police say he was under the influence of alcohol. The 21-year-old shortstop faces a hearing today. He was driving an SUV that collided with a motorcycle that had three passengers on a highway after curfew. He could face up to five years in prison, according to ESPN.
